P1: We welcome you in London. It’s a very large city in the world. About 7 million people live here. London is more than two thousand years old. It’s most famous sights are: the Houses of Parliament, Trafalgar Square with the monument to Admiral Nelson, the National Gallery, Downing Street, Whitehall. You’ll see all these places and much more of London from our double-decker.

T: Who knows when the first double-decker was built and how it looked like? Let’s ask our driver about it.

Driver (ученик в кепке шофёра): The first double-decker was built in 1851, but the upper deck didn’t have a roof until 1930. And the driver gave to the passengers raincoats to put on if it started to rain.

P2: Now we are coming to the centre of London.

Trafalgar Square is a geographical centre of London. It’s the largest among London’s squares. Trafalgar Square is the place where mass meetings, demonstrations and celebrations are held.

In the centre of the square you can see Nelson Coloumn – the monument to the great English admiral. The Square is named so to honour his victory. The statue of the admiral decorates the top of the coloumn. The main building of Trafalgar Square is the National Gallery. A great many tourists visit the gallery. It was opened in 1838. There is a big collection of paintings of the famous painters: Rubens, Rembrandt and others.

P3: And then we are at the Houses of Parliament. It is the seat of the British Parliament. Here you can see the House of Commons and the House of Lords.

The Clock Tower of the Houses of Parliament is famous for its big hour Bell, known as “Big Ben”. Big Ben is named after Sir Benjamin Hall. In fact Big Ben is really the name of the bell in the tower, not of the clock.

P4: Number 10, Downing Street has been the home of the British Prime Minister since 1735.

Downing Street leads off the south-west end of Whitehall. Whitehall is a road in Westminster. It is the main road running north from Parliament Square to Changing Cross. Now you can see busy Whitehall traffic with the clock tower and Big Ben.
